Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Decimal Degrees and DMS?

Both represent the same position on Earth. Decimal Degrees (e.g., 28.6139°N) are used by web mapping and GPS software. Degrees Minutes Seconds (e.g., 28°36'50"N) are used in traditional navigation, surveying, and aeronautical charts. Our Coordinate Converter converts between all formats instantly.

What is UTM and when should I use it?

UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) is a grid-based coordinate system that uses metres for distance. It is used in topographic maps, construction, and any application where you need true distance measurements in metric units. Each UTM zone covers 6° of longitude.

How do I convert my Garmin or Strava GPS track to KML?

Export your activity as a GPX file from Garmin Connect or Strava (Settings → Export). Then upload it to our GPX to KML converter. Your tracks, waypoints, and elevation data will be preserved in the output.

What datum are coordinates based on?

WGS84 is the default datum used across all our tools. This is the same datum used by GPS satellites, Google Earth, and the US military MGRS system. It is equivalent to EPSG:4326.

Can I convert a batch of coordinates at once?

Yes. The Coordinate Converter accepts CSV uploads. Your entire column of coordinates converts at once, with all output formats (DD, DMS, UTM, MGRS) added as new columns for download.
