How to Measure Area from an Image

1

Upload Your Image

Upload any map photo, drone orthomosaic, satellite screenshot, or scanned survey sketch directly into the browser canvas.

2

Set Your Scale

Use the Reference Line tool to draw a known real-world distance directly on the image to calibrate the scale accurately.

3

Draw & Calculate

Draw polygons over the areas you want to measure. The real-world acreage or square meters is calculated instantly.

Why Measure from Images?

Often, you have visual data that isn't georeferenced—like a drone photo shared via WhatsApp, a screenshot from a PDF plan, or an old paper survey map. Setting up QGIS or AutoCAD to measure these is overkill.

  • Drone Operators — Quickly measure field areas or construction zones from raw orthomosaic snapshots.
  • Agriculture Planning — Estimate crop acreage from satellite screenshots without needing KML coordinates.
  • Survey & Construction — Calculate the area of a floor plan or blueprint instantly by drawing a reference line over a known wall length.
  • Total Privacy — Because the image loads strictly in your browser RAM, confidential site plans never touch the internet.

Advanced Tool Features

AI Autotrace Engine

Don't manually click corners. Let our flood-fill engine automatically trace the boundaries of fields, buildings, or water bodies based on color tolerance.

DXF CAD Export

Traced an image perfectly? Export the polygons directly as a clean DXF file containing primitive LINE elements ready to drop into AutoCAD or Civil3D.

Image Calibration

Rotate, pan, zoom, and change image opacity on the interactive canvas before locking it in place as your reference schematic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the scale if I don't know the pixel size?+

Use the Reference Line tool. Click two points on the image that represent a known real-world distance (e.g., a field boundary or building wall you know the length of). Enter that distance and the tool calculates the precise scale automatically.

What image formats can I use?+

Any image your browser can display — JPG, PNG, WebP, etc. This includes drone orthomosaics, Google Earth screenshots, scanned paper maps, PDF floor plans (exported as images), and satellite photos.

How accurate is the area calculation?+

The pixel-level calculation uses the Shoelace formula which is mathematically exact for flat images. The real-world accuracy depends entirely on how accurately you set the scale line. If your scale reference is correct, the area result will match professional GIS calculations.

Is my data or image uploaded to your servers?+

No. The image is loaded directly into your browser's local canvas. It is never sent to any server. All processing and calculations happen locally on your computer, ensuring total privacy.

Can I export the result?+

Yes. You can click "Export PNG" to download the canvas showing your image overlaid with the measured polygons. You can also export the geometry to advanced formats like DXF or JSON.
